Department of Energy, Hanford Site - 105KE Reactor Core Removal Design

Hanford's "sister reactors", the K-East and K-West reactors, were built in the 1950's, running from 1955 to 1971. Work is ongoing toward the ultimate goal of cocooning the reactors. The 105 K East (105KE) reactor is slated to be cocooned in the year 2015, but much work must be done before that can take place.

Removal of the 100K East reactor's graphite core is a multi-year transitional engineering, procurement, construction, decommissioning and demolition project.

As a Tier 2 subcontractor, FE&C provided our client with operations, radiological control, work planning and field supervision support for this high-visibility decommissioning endeavor. This work included ongoing operational readiness and extensive decommissioning planning and implementation. The contract also included extensive optioneering of alternatives, reviewed by stakeholders and regulators to select the best methodology to perform decommissioning operations.

CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Company - D4/Remediation Support

As the primary focus for CH2M HILL, the approximately 75-square-mile Central Plateau in the center of the Hanford Site comprises the 200 Areas, which include the Plutonium Finishing Plant, U Plant, T Plant, numerous industrial facilities, and associated waste sites. There are over 800 buildings and 500 waste sites throughout the Hanford Site. FE&C provides professional and technical support to CHPRC for the planning and execution of Demolition, Remediation, Waste Disposition, Radiological Control, and Project Management.

Department of Energy, Savannah River Site - EVMS Certification Project Management Support

The Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) is a nuclear waste treatment facility in Aiken, South Carolina on the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site that treats nuclear salt waste. the Savannah River Site contains legacy nuclear salt waste from the production of nuclear materials between 1951 and 2002. The nuclear waste is stored in large underground storage tanks.

FE&C provided project management support services to the SWPF integrated project team in identifying and portraying Earned Value Management System (EVMS) key processes. The key benefit of this work is to determine the strengths and weaknesses within the SWPF EVMS system prior to the certification review and to help project participants understand the work processes utilized by the project by EVMS. FE&C personnel reviewed the EVMS system and assessed vulnerabilities and recommended solutions to strengthen these systems.

Mission Support Alliance - Infrastructure Support

The Hanford Site consists of 650 square miles of land with an extensive infrastructure. The Mission Support Contract overseen by MSA comprises site safety, security, and environment, infrastructure and utilities, business management, information resources and content management, and portfolio management for the entire Hanford site.

FE&C provides professional, technical and union craft support to MSA for the development and delivery of Training, Crane and Rigging, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Quality, and Project Management.

Venn Engineering Services Ltd, UK - Nuclear Decommissioning Consultancy Services

The United Kingdom is going through a large scale decommissioning of many outdated reactors. FE&C was hired to provide detailed information on best practice contaminated decommissioning methodologies for implementation at Haysham and Hartlepool nuclear reactors in Northern England. Best practice information included crew size and composition, technical approach, work throughput, determination of volumes of waste from in-situ to packaged, decontamination factors success rates, determination of secondary processing rates, duration and sequencing plans, duration and cost plans, and more for both reactors.

Department of Energy, Office of River Protection - Professional Management Support

The Department of Energy's Office of River Protection is tasked with managing the liquid and semi-solid nuclear and chemical waste that is currently stored in 177 underground tanks on the Hanford site. In addition, ORP is constructing and will eventually manage the Waste Treatment Plant, a massive complex of structures which will combine the wastes from these tanks with glass in a process called vitrification, preparing the waste for stable long-term storage.

FE&C provided professional management support for project scheduling, performance tracking, and corrective actions to the Office of River Protection. Management included project schedulers, project controls, corrective action management, and cost analysis.

Washington River Protection Solutions - Tank Farms Support

Hanford’s 56 million gallons of highly radioactive and chemical waste are stored in 177 underground tanks - 149 older single-shell tanks and 28 newer and safer double-shell tanks that are grouped into 18 farms at the Hanford Site. These aging tanks are just a few miles from the Columbia River. The tank contents include waste from years of World War II and post-war production of material for nuclear weapons and account for 60 percent by volume of the nation’s high-level radioactive waste. WRPS is tasked with safely managing the waste until it is prepared for disposal. FE&C provides professional and technical staff to WRPS in direct support of the development and execution of tank farm cleanup projects. Scopes of work include Project Definition, Options Analysis, Critical Decisions, Design Management, Project Controls, and Performance Reporting.

Magnox Electric - United Kingdom Magnox Reactor Decommissioning Support

The Magnox Reactors in various locations in the UK are being phased out of service and undergoing decommissioning. FE&C provided strategic and technical management support to Magnox Electric for the accelerated demolition and clearance of these Magnox Stations. Scope of support provided included Decommissioning Strategies, DE&C Project Planning and Execution, Radiological Control, Waste Management, Project Controls, Workforce Transition Planning, Retraining, and Stakeholder and Regulatory engagement processes.

Magnox Electric - United Kingdom Magnox Reactor Decommissioning Support

Because of the staff’s extensive and innovative experience with decommissioning nuclear facilities, FE&C was tasked to provide technical services to the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)’s prime contractor. Individuals from FE&C lived and worked in Somerset, England while working with the British team. Personnel provided included both American Ex-Pat and British Citizen subcontract personnel, performing in direct report - staff augmentation positions.
